What is psychological coaching?
Genuine psychological coaching can be used in a variety of ways to help people overcome and cope with life issues and/or support people to make lifestyle changes. Ultimately coaching is about delivering sustainable and valuable progress and change by helping people to overcome their personal difficulties or to achieve their personal life goals. Coaches are trained to avoid telling you what to do, but they are there to help you find your own solutions. Coaching can challenge you, and that is often exactly what you are looking for and what you need. If you are willing to put in a bit of effort, then welcome aboard.
So where does Health Psychology come into it?
Health psychologists in particular are trained to understand health behaviour change models and principles. It is through the use of these models that we understand human behaviour, human thoughts, and human needs. This understanding puts us in the best position to bring about changes to lifestyle where it is desired. Weston Psychology delivers a professional psychological support service which involves the use of behaviour change models from the field of health psychology to discover more about you as a person. Armed with this information we can then constructively challenge thoughts, perspectives, feelings and opinions to help you cope with health and life issues and make better lifestyle decisions. Not only this - as a coach, Dr Weston will provide ongoing support in practical tasks so that you can feel yourself actively changing and achieving your personal goals. We work with you to move you forward.
Is it Therapy?
Jennifer uses a range of coaching models and therapeutic approaches in her psychological coaching sessions. She is trained in the use of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural techniques, solution-focused therapy and mindfulness training. Coaching is not 'psychotherapy' in the traditional sense - however it incorporates all these therapeutic techniques to help move people forward.
